There are many floor finishes in construction that have next to zero tolerance to achieve the desired aesthetic, and unfortunately most slabs don’t meet this tolerance without some level of preparation.
Self levelling is the most economical, fastest and accurate way to achieve a dead level floor. Having said this, without the proper preparation, primers and additives it can fail, leaving you with a finished floor that needs to be ripped up and re-done.
Before applying any self leveller we ensure bond and strength by:
Diamond grind of the slab to open up the concrete’s pores and provide a mechanical key
Application of a primer if necessary (depending on the substrate)
Use of bond enhancers mixed in with the self leveller

Concrete grinding
Concrete grinding is often required prior to the application of many floor and waterproofing systems. It be used to achieve the following with a max depth of 10mm recommended to maintain concrete cover around the steel:
Remove individual humps or bumps in the slab
Remove surface contamination
Achieve a desired surface profile
Remove old epoxy or waterproof coatings
Create falls in the slab over a short area (max 10mm)
Expose the aggregate and polish the concrete
Polymer modified and epoxy screeds
In some instances a traditional sand/cement screed is not suitable and a polymer modified or epoxy screed is the correct choice.
When it comes to correcting falls in wet areas such as bathrooms, balconies or planter boxes a polymer modified screed is almost always the choice to create a compliant sub-grade before waterproofing.
Products such as Gripset C-Bed allow shrinkage compensated high strength screeds between 5-200mm. Often to correct concrete falls in wet areas a traditional screed is unsuitable and needs a minimum bonded thickness of 25-35mm. A polymer modified product than can be feathered out to 5mm while retaining its strength is the perfect solution for sub-grade correction and won’t impact the bond strength of subsequent waterproof coatings.
